A faction of the Gonojagoron Mancha today called for quick execution of the death penalty handed down to Mir Quasem Ali for crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971.

There are previous examples that a verdict given by the tribunal has been commuted by an Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court,” Imran H Sarker, spokesperson of the faction, said today.

“This kind of apprehension is still in our mind. We will remain alert until execution of the verdict," he said.

The appeal, if Quasem files any challenging his death penalty, should be moved before separate bench, he said.

The comments were made from a rally that the Gonojagoron Mancha brought out in the capital’s Shahbagh in favour of Quasem’s death penalty today.

Mir Quasem Ali was infamous for leading Al-Badr force in torturing freedom fighters at a hotel in Chittagong to death.

Gonojagoron Mancha termed the verdict satisfactory saying, “It reflects people’s expectation”.
