Report on Extortion: Rejoinder, our reply
Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity has sent a rejoinder to a report headlined “Extortion rampant in transport sector” published in The Daily Star on its front page yesterday.
Signed by Mahbubur Rahman, vice-president ofthe road transport owners' platform, the rejoinder saidthe statements attributed to the president and the secretary general were not their speeches.
It said the speeches of the president and the general secretary are as follows:
We sat with Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation several times to discuss different problems in the road transport sector and we held several meetings to stop extortion in the sector. In the meeting, the Sramik Federation proposed checking extortion. But our proposal was not controlling of extortion. Rather, there will be no extortion on roads and at terminals. Tolls will be collected at different offices. Workers will give toll at their offices, owners will pay toll at their offices. The Sramik Federation is yet to agree on the matter. If we can reach an agreement with the Sramik Federation, we will inform it to you.Owners at the meeting agreed to it.
The rejoinder also said the report published in this paper created confusion between the two platforms.
