Wrists of a man chopped off
Goons of a union parishad chairman cut off the wrists of a man early yesterday following feud over the leases of a cattle market and a river ghat in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila, the victim has alleged.
The man, Rubel Hossain, 24, of the upazila’s Ranihati Bazar area, is receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Talking to reporters at the hospital yesterday, Rubel said armed with sharp weapons, some 10 followers of Foyezuddin, chairman of Ujirpur union parishad, stopped a motorcycle carrying him and two others in Ujirpur Beribandh area on Wednesday night.
The attackers beat and confined the two others at a primary school in the area and took Rubel to a nearby char of the Padma river.
The goons then blindfolded Rubel and gagged him with a piece of cloth. At one point of torture, around 1:00am yesterday, they severed his wrists with sharp weapons and left him there bleeding.
Learning about the incident from locals, Rubel’s relatives rescued him and took him to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital. He was shifted to the hospital in Rajshahi around 5:00am.
Shamsur Rahman, organising secretary of Shibganj Awami League, told reporters said both Rubel and Foyezuddin are AL supporters. There has been a longstanding feud between them over “taking control” of Tartipur cattle haat and nearby ghat of the Padma river, he said.
Rubel said his cousin Abdus Salam, also a local AL leader, got the leases of the haat and the ghat from the authorities concerned early this year and Foyezuddin was trying to take the lease from them since the very beginning.
The attack was carried out over the feud, he said.
“Foyezuddin wanted total control of the business,” he said.
After the incident, Foyezuddin went into hiding switching off his phone. He, however, was detained in Chapainawabganj Sadar’s Amnura area around 9:00 last night, said Atik Islam, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station.
“We are investigating,” he said.
Police also held two of Foyezuddin’s accomplices for their alleged involvement in the incident.
No case was filed till last night as the victim was being treated at hospital, said police sources.
