An activist of the Awami League rebel chairman candidate for Mathbaria upazila was hacked to death allegedly by supporters of the AL candidate yesterday.
Jony Talukder, 28, of Gulisakhali village, was a follower of AL rebel chairman candidate Riaz Uddin Ahmed. He was the vice-president of Holta Gulisakhali union unit Swechchhasebak League.
This upazila will go to polls in the fourth phase on March 31.
Riaz alleged that around 9:00am, supporters of AL chairman contender Hossain Mosharraf Saku hacked Jony on his way to Gulisakhali Bazar from his home, leaving him critically injured.
Jony was first taken to Mathbaria Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. He died there later.
Yakub Faraji, panel chairman of Holta Gulisakhali union, said around a month ago, Jony joined hands with Mathbaria Upazila Parishad Chairman Ashrafur Rahman, leaving Rafiuddin Ahmed Ferdaus, Mathbaria municipality chairman and upazila unit AL president.
Following this, followers of Mosharraf became angry with Jony. It was the main reason for his murder, Yakub said.
Ashrafur is the elder brother of Riaz, member of Mathbaria upazila unit AL, while Ferdaus is working for AL candidate Mosharraf.
On Saturday night, supporters of Riaz allegedly attacked Mosharraf and his men at Gulisakhali Bazar.
Following the attack, Jony might have been killed, said MR Shawkat Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mathbaria Police Station.
There has been a longstanding conflict between Rafiuddin and Ashrafur over establishing supremacy in the area. So, attacks and counter attacks among supporters of the two happened several times in the last couple of years, said locals.
In the upazila polls, Ashrafur failed to get party nomination. His brother Riaz is competing in the race as an independent candidate.
Police detained a man in connection with Jony murder.
This correspondent could not contact Mosharraf for comment as his phone was found switched off.
