Tigers fall flat again
Bangladesh were handed an eight-wicket thumping by hosts New Zealand in the second of a three-match ODI series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch yesterday. With an identical-margin defeat in the opening ODI, the Tigers have already lost the series and will have precious little to salvage in the third and final ODI in Dunedin on Wednesday.
The pitch in Christchurch was the type where the ball came nicely onto the bat and so, Bangladesh's batsmen have only themselves to blame for their abysmal showing on the day. There was a lot on offer from the wicket for the batsmen who could bide their time and choose shots according to the merit of each delivery. The home team's batsmen had hardly any trouble chasing down the below par 226-run total set by Bangladesh in just 36.1 overs.
According to Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman, who missed out on a half-century by seven runs, the Tigers' inability to adapt to conditions is not to blame; rather it was the side's failure to execute plans which cost them the match.
“We just played the BPL a few days ago and it has been almost ten days since we came here. I think the condition is alright but we just cannot execute our plan,” Sabbir said. “I think everything is fine, we played in New Zealand before and the wicket is also very good here. The wicket gets even better after ten overs and the weather is also good but the problem is that we are not being able to execute our plan properly.”
While the bowlers had little to no scope to help avert yesterday's defeat, the Tigers will need to up their game in both departments if they are to avoid the humiliation of a whitewash come Wednesday.
