Three die in landslides

Three people, including a couple, were killed in landslides in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban yesterday.

In Cox’s Bazar, the couple were buried alive beneath the mud when a chunk of earth fell on their hut in Bamubeelchari village of Chakaria upazila around 1:30am.

They are day labourer Mohammad Sadek, 36, and his wife Walida Begum, 24.

Villagers said the couple had been living at the foot of a hill for the last couple of years.

Abdul Motleb, chairman of Bamubeelchari Union Parishad, said it had been raining for the last few days and it triggered the landslide that killed the two when they were asleep. Locals recovered the bodies, he added.

Except the duo, nobody was at the house during the landslide, said locals.

Nuruddin Mohammad Shibli Noman, Chakaria upazila nirbahi officer, said relocation of the people from the risky hillside was going on.

In Bandarban’s Lama upazila, Nurjahan Begum, 70, was killed early yesterday when a chunk of mud from a hill collapsed on her house in Madhujiri area.

Her son and his wife were also injured and admitted to Lama Upazila Health Complex, said Oppela Raju Naha, officer-in-charge of Lama Police Station.

Meanwhile, one Menpong Mro, 25, of Cramadi Para of Bandarban Sadar upazila, died when a chunk of soil fell on him when he was working in his Jhum field on Saturday evening, said U Kyaw Nu Marma, chairman of Sualok Union Parishad.
