‘My daughter couldn’t have killed herself’
Although police found some clues, mystery over the death of Stamford University student Rubaiyat Sharmin Rumpa was yet to be resolved.
On Wednesday, her body was found near a building on an alley of Siddheshwari Circular Road in the capital.
Yesterday police said Rumpa, 22, had visited the 11-storey building -- Ayesha Shopping Complex -- around 5:00pm on that day. One of her schoolfriends lives on the fourth floor.
During the visit, Rumpa shared her frustration over personal issues and even cried before her friend, said police, quoting the friend.
Around 5:30pm, Rumpa left the building for giving tuitions to her fourth grader student near her home in Shantibagh.
Around 6:40pm, she returned to her home and asked her 12-year-old cousin to bring a pair of sandals for her. She then left her purse and shoes with the cousin and left the place wearing the sandals.
Around five hours later, her body was found near Ayesha Shopping Complex. A pair of sandals was found near the body.
In addition to this, police found a CCTV footage that shows a female getting inside the alley, where three buildings including Ayesha Shopping Complex are situated, that evening.
Police, however, could not confirm whether the female was Rumpa.
Police could not tell where Rumpa was between 6:45pm and 10:45pm.
SM Shamim, assistant commissioner (Ramna Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said, “We are talking to people close to the victim and also with some people living in the area. Hopefully, we will be able to say something soon.”
Meanwhile, Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, said the DB took one of Rumpa’s friends -- Abdur Rahman Saikat -- in custody for quizzing.
The law enforcers were looking into all aspects of the case, he added.
On Friday, police said they found fresh sandal prints on an edge of Ayesha Shopping Complex’s rooftop.
Law enforcers were trying to find whether the footprint and the sandals were of the same person.
“Rumpa knew the rooftop. She had gone there before,” a police official, involved in the investigation, told The Daily Star seeking anonymity.
Tajul Islam, a cleaner of the building, said the building’s lift was not under CCTV coverage, but two CCTV cameras on the first and second floor cover anyone using the staircases.
Forensic doctors suspected Rumpa died falling from a building. Some of the tenants in the area also said they heard a loud sound before they discovered the body lying upside down, motionless on the alley.
From her house in Shantibagh, it takes around nine minutes to reach Ayesha Shopping Complex by feet.
The father of Rumpa, Rokan Uddin, yesterday claimed his daughter was murdered in a planned way.
He said, “It is not believable that she [Rumpa] could commit suicide.”
Rokan, a police inspector stationed in Habiganj, said he suspected some youths’ involvement in the murder and had already submitted some names to law enforcement agencies.
Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, yesterday said, “We are working considering it a murder as a murder case was filed in connection with the incident,” the police official said.
