Miscreants kill a man, ‘with help from cops’
A group of miscreants drowned a youth in Betbaria village of Rajbari's Kalukhali upazila, family of the victim claims, adding that police were also involved in the killing.
The dead is Rabiul Islam, 30, a resident of the same village.
Family members of the victim said three policemen, including SI Fazlul Haque of Kalukhali Police Station, picked him up from his home on early yesterday and handed him over to some drug peddlers -- Elias, Rakib and Rafiq -- of the locality who later killed Rabiul by drowning him in Munaiyer Beel in the locality.
Earlier on Thursday evening, a group of villagers had an altercation with the drug dealers over selling drugs in the village.
At one point local union parishad member Yousuf Hossain intervened at the scene and drove the drug peddlers away, said the family of the deceased, adding that Yousuf maintains a good relationship with the perpetrators.
Contacted, Yusuf, however, said some of his rivals were hatching a conspiracy against him.
Later on the same night, the drug dealers filed a case accusing Rabiul and one Babul Biswas, said Kamrul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Kalukhali Police Station.
Police arrested Babul in the case from his residence early yesterday, the OC said, but he denied the arrest of Rabiul.
Contacted, Md Mizanur Rahman, superintendent of police in Rajbari, said they would investigate into the incident when a case would be filed in this regard.
No case was filed till filing of the report last night, said OC Kamrul.
Meanwhile, five policemen were abused by aggrieved locals when they went to recover the body from a pond in the locality yesterday morning, said Kamrul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Kalukhali Police Station.
Locals also kept them confined for a while, he said.
The injured policemen are SI Fazlul, SI Shohag, SI Firoz and two other constables whose names could not be known immediately.
