Man killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’
A youth was killed during a "gunfight" between police and some people who allegedly tried to snatch an arrestee from a police vehicle at Mithapanirchara Bazar area in Teknaf Sadar upazila of Cox's Bazar yesterday.
The dead was identified as Khorshed Alam, 22, younger brother of the arrestee Shamsul Alam, 35, of Mithapanirchara area in the upazila, said police.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Shamsul Alam, 35, a fugitive accused in seven cases including drug peddling and money laundering from his village, said Mohammad Hassanuzzaman, superintendent of police in Cox's Bazar.
The police team came under attack at Mithapanir Bazar area around 12am yesterday, he claimed.
SP Hassanuzzaman also claimed that a group of armed criminals, including Khorshed Alam, attacked police barricading the road and tried to snatch Shamsul.
In self-defence, police also shot fires triggering the "gunfight", he said, adding that police later came to know that Khorshed was wounded on the spot and declared dead by doctors when he was rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.
Police abled to take Shamsul to the police station when the criminals managed to flee from the scene. Three of their police personnel received injuries during the "gunfight", the police officer claimed.
Shaheen Alam, a brother of the dead, however, said on Tuesday night Khorshed and some other youths were playing badminton at Mithapanirchara Bazar.
In the meantime, some people were taking their eldest brother Shamsul boarding on a CNG run auto-rickshaw toward Teknaf picking him up from their house, Shaheen said.
Bullets were fired from the CNG when some people put barricade on the way at Mithapanirchara Bazar and tried to snatch Shamsul, he said.
Then the CNG went away immediately with their brother, Shaheen said.
The body was handed over to police after postmortem, said Shaheen Mohammad Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, residential medical officer (RMO) of Cox's Bazar General Hospital.
The injured police personnel -- ASI Ratan Mia, constables Shafiqul and Balram Das -- were undergoing treatment at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, the SP said.
Two cases are under process in this connection, police said, adding Khorshed was also an accused of eight cases.
