HC asks why Shahid’s JS membership shouldn’t be cancelled
The High Court yesterday wanted to know why the parliamentary membership of Kazi Shahid Islam Papul, who has been elected from Laxmipur-2 constituency, should not be cancelled for providing false information to the Election Commission through his affidavit.
The court issued a rule asking the respondents to explain to this effect in four weeks. Speaker to the Jatiya Sangsad, its secretary, Election Commission and its secretary, deputy commissioner of Laxmipur and Kazi Shahid Islam Papul have been made respondents to the rule.
The High Court bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by Abul Fayez Bhuiyan, a resident of Laxmipur, challenging the legality of holding the office of lawmaker by Shahid Islam Papul.
Petitioner's lawyer Advocate Sheikh Awsafur Rahman told The Daily Star that Kazi Shahid Islam Papul has submitted a Degree pass certificate to the EC along with the affidavit before the last parliamentary election but he said in the affidavit that he passed the Master's degree.
Besides, Shahid Islam Papul, now an independent MP, did not submit his SSC and HSC certificates to the EC which is a fraudulence, and therefore, he cannot hold the office of MP, the lawyer said.
On June 6, Kuwait's Criminal Investigation Department arrested Shahid on charges of human trafficking, visa trading, and money laundering. Deputy Attorney General Momtaz Parvin represented the state during the hearing.
