Girl killed as bus hits motorbike
A road crash yesterday killed a 10-year-old girl near Bijoy Sarani intersection in Dhaka.
The victim is Marzana, a student of grade III at Ideal Kindergarten School in Gazipur, said Kamal Uddin, inspector (investigation) of Tejgaon Police Station.
According to the police official, the girl and her father were riding a motorbike when a speedy bus of Dewan Paribahan rammed their vehicle.
The girl died on the spot and her father Mizanur Rahman, 38, principal of Jamia Rahmania Madrasa in Gazipur, sustained injuries on his head, knees and hands, he added.
A witness of the accident said the bus dragged the girl around eight yards under its rear wheels. She could not survive for more than a few seconds after the accident.
The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, police seized the bus and detained its driver. No case was filed in connection with the accident as of 1:00am today.
According to road safety campaigner Nirapad Sarak Chai, the number of road crashes and deaths rose alarmingly last year.
Buses, trucks and covered vans were responsible for 39 percent road accidents and motorcycle for 19 percent, it said.
