Four including 3 of a family killed as train hits car
Four people, including three of a family, were killed and two others injured as a train hit a car on a level crossing in Jashore's Noapara yesterday.
The Khulna-bound Mahananda Express coming from Chapainawabganj hit the car while crossing the Bhanga gate level crossing around 5:30pm. The vehicle, carrying six people, was going to Noapara from Narail, said police and fire service officials.
The train pushed the car around 150 metres forward on the rail track, they said.
Mohsin Reza, station master of Noapara, said there was no gateman at the level crossing when the train was crossing it. The car driver tried to cross the level crossing without noticing the train coming.
All the deceased were car passengers. Two of them died on the spot.
The dead are Hirok Bhuiyan, 42, of Narail, his sister Shilpi Begum, 32, her daughter Raysha, 8, and his friend Ashraful, 40.
Train communications remained halted for around two years after the accident.
Officials of Noapara fire service rushed to the spot and rescued the injured with the help of locals and took them to the local upazila health complex.
Iffat Sharmin, physician of Abhoynagar Upazila Health Complex, said they referred two injured to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) as they were critically wounded.
Shaown Begum, wife of the deceased Hirok, and her one-year-old daughter Humaira were undergoing treatment at KMCH.
