Cops recover machete used in the murder
Police yesterday recovered a sharp weapon used in the killing of Rifat Sharif from a ditch near the Barguna Government College hostel.
They also arrested a suspect in connection with the murder.
Based on information from Rifat Farazi, one of the key accused in the murder, police, along with him, conducted a drive around 9:30am and recovered a machete, said Humayun Kabir, investigation officer of the case.
Farazi has been on a seven-day remand since July 3, added Kabir, also officer-in-charge (investigation) of Barguna Sadar Police Station.
Meanwhile, police held Arian Shrabon, 22, of Barguna town, for his alleged involvement in the killing around 4:00am yesterday. But police did not disclose the place of his arrest.
Including Arian, police have arrested 10 people in connection with the murder. Besides, main accused Sabbir Hossain Nayan alias Nayan Bond was killed in a “gunfight” with police on July 2.
Six, including three whose names were in FIR, gave confessional statements under section 164 before the court, said the IO.
Around 10:30am on June 26, Nayan and Farazi, along with some others, hacked 25-year-old Rifat in front of Barguna Government College when Rifat and his wife Ayesha Siddiqua were leaving the college premises. He died at Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Footage of the attack went viral on social media.
Later, Rifat’s father Abdul Halim Dulal Sharif filed a case with Barguna Sadar Police Station accusing 12, including Nayan and Farazi.
Police have arrested five of them while accused Nayan was killed in a “shootout”.
Six others are on the run. They are Risan Farazi, Musa, Rabbi Akon, Rakibul Islam Rifat, Mohaiminul Sifat and Rayhan.
Police are trying to arrest the others, said IO Kabir.
