AL leader shot dead in Savar

Unidentified assailants shot dead an Awami League leader in Savar’s Baktarpur area yesterday.

The dead is Abdul Mazid, 37, assistant public affairs secretary of Savar municipality unit Awami League.

According to police, criminals shot Mazid in his head near his home while he was returning from Dhaka. He was then rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Swapan Sheikh, 26, a local AL activist, sustained bullet injuries during the attack and was receiving treatment at the hospital, police added.

Saidur Rahman, additional superintendent (crime) of Dhaka district police, said Mazid’s father Abul Kashem filed a murder case with Savar Police Station against nine named and eight to nine unnamed people.

The accused are Mikail Mollah, 60, Anwar, 60, Morin Hossain, 45, Moktar Hossain, 40, Swapan, 38, Sujat, 38, Babu, 26, Munir, 20, and Ripon, 20, all neighbours of Mazid.

Police primarily suspected the murder happened over previous enmity, ASP Saidur added.

Inspector Saiful Islam, investigation officer of the case, said they arrested Moktar and were interrogating him.
