3,000 dead and counting
The number of deaths from Covid-19 infection in the country reached the grim milestone of 3,000 yesterday, with 35 new deaths.
The depressing milestone coincided with another bad news of becoming the 16th most infected countries of the world in terms of coronavirus positive cases.
Turkey, which has been detecting below 1,000 cases a day in the last couple of days, used to be the 16th most infected countries with 2,27,019 positive cases till Monday.
On Monday, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh was 2,26,225. Yesterday, the country detected another 2,960 cases, taking the figure of positive cases so far to 2,29,185, according to worldometers.info.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation in its Covid-19 situation report on Bangladesh published on Monday said the number of tests has been observed dropping gradually since July 3.
According to it, the number of tests fell by 5.1 percent in the last one week.
At the regular briefing on Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh, Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general (administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services, said 12,714 samples were tested across the country in 24 hours till 8:30am yesterday.
The previous day, 12,859 samples were tested.
According to the DGHS, in the last 20 weeks since the detection of first coronavirus case in the country, 2,243 people, aged over 50, died from novel coronavirus infection.
Of the 3,000 dead, 2,358 were male and the rest were female.
Thirty-five more people breathed their last in the 24 hours after being infected with coronavirus, said Prof Nasima.
The death rate now stands at 1.31 percent of the confirmed Covid-19 cases, she said at the online briefing yesterday.
Meanwhile, 1,731 Covid-19 patients recovered in the 24 hours.
The number of recoveries is now 1,27,414, and the recovery rate is 55.59 percent.
Some 713 people were put under isolation in the 24 hours, added Prof Nasima.
