Four outlaws to die for murder in Bagerhat
A court here yesterday sentenced four members of an outlawed party to death for killing a 'gram' (village) police in 2004.
The convicts are Shamim Sheikh, son of Abul Sheikh, Anwar Sheikh, son of Osman Sheikh of Mulghar village, Rony Sardar, son of Abdul Ali Sardar of Kakdanga village and Habi Molla, son of Harun Molla of Sonakhali village in Fakirhat upazila. All of them were active members of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML).
They were tried in absentia.
One of the accused, Ibrahim Sheikh alias Ibra, son of Imruj Sheikh of Mulghar, died during the trial.
According to the prosecution, Harun-or-Rashid, 55, a village police and son of Zahir Uddin Sheikh of Mulghar village was shot dead by the outlaws while he was returning home from a local market around 9:00pm on January 27, 2004.
Hiru Sheikh, younger brother of the deceased, filed a case with Fakirhat police station the following day, accusing 'unidentified' killers.
Babul Chandra Banik, sub-inspector of Bagerhat DB police, submitted a chargesheet against five outlaws on July 10, 2004. He told the court in his report that the outlaws killed Harun as he often helped police and joint forces arrest the local criminals.
After examining records and witnesses, District and Sessions Judge SM Solaiman handed down the verdict.
