Folk identity on Nazir’s canvas
Gallery Cosmos-2 in New DOHS, Mohakhali has organised a solo art exhibition titled “Pater Gaan Banglar Bagh”, featuring the works of artist Nazir Hossain.
The subject of his paintings at the ongoing exhibition is the Bengal tiger, and the style of depiction has been motivated by the indigenous art form ‘Pata Chitra’. His works mainly are based on bucolic themes, and his artistic fascinations have been clearly articulated.
Nazir has developed a style that is not exceptional in our art milieu, but the artist is trying to make a personal trademark in his works. It is true that the paintings are raw in nature and at the same time modern in their expressions. His canvas shows the world of tigers, reptiles, owls, peacocks and other animal forms. Blue, black, yellow, white and crimson are used predominantly, giving a thoughtful approach to Nazir’s characters.
At the exhibition, a number of his works depict flying birds, fish, flowers, betel leaves and tiny birds next to men and women. The painter has used straight lines and curves when portraying human figure and other objects. The treatment of lines is simple in nature, giving an illustrative expression to the paintings. Most of his paintings depict a complete story that bears our traditional identity. Men playing flutes, women are seen in bright attires with silver jewellery. A blend of emotions, hardship and conflict are immersed in the paintings. The painter’s works are closely related to local myths, beliefs and visions.
Nazir was born in 1982 at Parbatipur in Dinajpur district. The painter has had over twenty solo and several group exhibitions including participation at the 18th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh and 19th National Art Exhibitions organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
The exhibition was inaugurated recently. Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest. Art critic Moinuddin Khaled was present as guest of honour. Seasoned artist Biren Shome and artist Afrozaa Jamil Konka were also present at the inauguration.
The exhibition will continue till November 24.
