Fire kills 5 of a family
Five members of a family were burnt alive in their home in Hathazari of Chittagong last night.
The fire broke out at their tin-shed house at Kumarikul village near Sarkarhat Bazar around 8:30pm, leaving them dead.
Two units from Hathazari fire station rushed to the spot and doused the flames around 9:00pm.
Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence of Chittagong District, said they were yet to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
The dead are Rosy Akter, 35, her son Maruf, 5, and three daughters -- Rina Akter, 12, Sima Akter, 10, and Jhuma Akter, 7.
Rosy's husband Mahbubul, a vegetable trader at Sarkarhat Bazar, was not home during the fire, locals said.
Police said an electric short circuit might have caused the fire.
Claiming to have seen a burnt gas cylinder at the kitchen, police said no neighbours heard any explosion.
