Ex-Ctg mayor gets bail in tax evasion case
Former Chittagong mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury got bail after he surrendered before a Chittagong court in a tax evasion case.
The case was filed on July 7, 2008 by National Board of Revenue under Income Tax Ordinance 1984 and Emergency Power Ordinance 2007 for evading tax of Tk 27.58 lakh.
Judge Ataur Rahman of Divisional Sessions Judge Court granted the bail after Mohiuddin surrendered before the court around 10:30am complying with a High Court order and sought bail in the case.
Meanwhile, the prosecution filed a petition before the court seeking withdrawal of the case as the government took decision during ruling Awami League-led government's 2009-2013 tenure to drop the charge brought against him terming it politically motivated case.
According to the case statement, Mohiuddin concealed information of wealth worth Tk 1.13 crore in his statement submitted to the National Board of Revenue, causing a loss of Tk 27.58 lakh to the government exchequer.
He had submitted false affidavit and income tax statements during 2004-07, the case statement said.
