Sundarbans fire doused
The fire that broke out in Daser Bharani area of Sharankhola Range in East Sundarbans on Wednesday morning was extinguished this afternoon.
Mohammed Belayet Hossain, divisional forest officer (DFO) of the East Sundarbans division, said the fire was now completely extinguished. No new fire or smoke was seen anywhere since afternoon.
The fire had broken out around 10:00am on Wednesday.
Talking to our Bagerhat correspondent, Joynal Abedin, assistant conservator of forests at the Sundarbans East Forest Department, said, "There was intense observation from everyone today. Reserved water has been provided at the places where smoke has been observed.
"No smoke was seen anywhere else till the afternoon. So, we think the fire is extinguished. However, the forest rangers will be monitoring the place for two more days."
Md Golam Sarwar, assistant director, Bagerhat Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, "Since May 3, three of our units have been working to put out the fire. We finished work on Thursday evening. The forest department did not call us today."
The fire broke out in Daser Varani area of Sharankhola Range at noon on Monday.
The fire was put out at 5:00pm on Tuesday after a 30-hour effort by the fire service, forest department and locals.
Later, on Wednesday morning, another fire broke out on the south side of the previous fire area, which was extinguished today.
It was the 26th fire incident in the Sundarbans in the last 20 years.
