River police seize 40,000-meter illegal fishing net from Halda-Karnaphuli estuary
River police of Chattogram seized 40,000 meters of illegal fishing net from the estuary of Halda and Karnaphuli rivers today.
The drive was conducted in the wake of a rise in illegal fishing at the connecting point of Karnaphuli-Halda rivers, a unique waterbody where natural spawning of carp like fish takes place.
A B M Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat River Police Station told The Daily Star that poachers have been active in placing snares in the river to net brood fish due to the opportune heavy rains of the last few days.
"We conducted the drive today seizing 40,000 meter of fishing net as well as removing 20 bamboo post installed in the river to catch fish", he said.
