2 dolphins wash ashore in Sitakunda coastal forest, Kuakata beach
Two dolphins washed ashore at Kuakata beach in Patuakhali and the coastal forest in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila today.
Officials of Chattogram Coastal Forest Division recovered a dead dolphin at Sayedpur union in Sitakunda this morning.
The mammal was found around 8:30am, reports our Chattogram correspondent.
HM Jalilur Rahman, beat officer of the division, told The Daily Star that forest staffers found the dolphin when they went ti investigate the foul smell that emanated from the dolphin's decomposing body.
"We recovered the body, which is six and a half feet in length and had no visible wounds, and buried it," he said.
However, he could not identify the species.
In Kuakata beach, another dolphin washed ashore this morning, making it the fourth dolphin to wash ashore this month.
Three dolphins were found at the beach on August 9 and 3.
In the morning today, local fishermen spotted the dead dolphin at Gangamati point of the beach.
The dolphin, about eight feet long, belongs to the Irabati species, said Kalapara Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Apu Saha.
Later, members of Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee buried the dolphins on the beach, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.
According to Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee, it is believed that the dolphin died after being caught in the fishermen's net as there were injury marks on its body.
Ruman Imtiaz Tushar, team leader of the Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee, said the sight of dead dolphins washing up on Kuakata beach is not new.
It has now become urgent to make fishermen aware about dolphins through training in order to minimise such incidents, he said.
