‘Ora Egaro Jon’ did not feel like a movie to me, it felt real: Nutan
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of historic film "Ora Egaro Jon", veteran actress Nutan gave a personal account on her transition to 'Shila', memorable incidents from the sets, and how she became emotional on watching the last scene.
'Ora Egaro Jon' is the first movie released after our independence. Directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam and produced by veteran actor Sohel Rana, the movie was released on 11, August in 1972. Most of the artistes of the liberation- war based movie have passed away.
"'Ora Egaro Jon' is a movie which is really close to my heart. People still fondly remember me as 'Shila' from the movie. It was my second film and I am really proud of being part of such a classic movie," said the actress.
"Veteran actress Sumita Devi held a party at her house, and all the stars were present at the event. Chashi Nazrul Islam sir and Sohel Rana bhai were impressed by my personality, and thus I was finalised as 'Shila' in the movie. The character and the story really touched my heart, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. Our path towards freedom wasn't an easy one; numerous people and freedom fighter shed their blood to free our country. It's an honour and a matter of pride to be part of 'Ora Egaro Jon'.
Nutan became emotional on recalling the final scenes of 'Ora Egaro Jon'.
"In the final scene, an army of 'Birangana' women comes out from the curtain and sings the melodious anthem 'Ek Sagor Rokter Binimoye'. This scene was shot on the second floor of BFDC. I could literally feel goosebumps all over my body. I felt like a true 'Birangana' at that time, as I witnessed the brutalities of the war myself.
"I had to flee with my mother in a small village on Trishal, in Mymensingh. I have witnessed the sufferings of the people first-hand. We couldn't eat anything during those tumultuous times. That is why the movie "Ora Egaro Jon" did not feel like a movie, rather, it felt like I was reliving those difficult moments.
The veteran actress could not hold her tears during the premiere of the movie.
"A special screening of the movie was held at BFDC, and I was literally brought to tears after watching the premiere show. My emotions flooded my eyes, and tears started to roll down my cheeks. I still remember that moment, and these things will stay with me till eternity. It is truly an honour and privilege to see the 50th anniversary of "Ora Egaro Jon". My heartiest love and gratitude towards Chashi Nazrul Islam and Sohel Rana for creating this movie".
"Another memorable incident which will stay with me is working with Khasru bhai, along with other freedom fighters. This was a huge feat for me as they witnessed the actual severities of war.
Nutan also recalled how she trained hard to get into the skin of the character.
"I took it as a challenge when I got the role of 'Shila'. I started to imagine myself as a 'Birangana' woman, and tried to feel her emotions. This film is a symbol and actual representation of the actual war. It will teach the new generation to love their country and fall in love with liberation war movies. It's been 50 years since the release of the movie, and I still can't bear the loss of Nayak Raj Razzak and Chashi Nazrul Islam."
"Upon its release, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman watched the movie, and praised it. We were able to achieve freedom from the Pakistani armies due to his powerful leadership. His guiding force led to the birth of Bangladesh – and 'Ora Egaro Jon' attempts to reflect the struggles behind this freedom."
