Iranian filmmaker found murdered in his home
Noted Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar, passed away yesterday at their residence in Tehran, Iran. According to the media reports, the two were discovered dead by their daughter Mona Mehrjui who went to visit her parents.
The 83-year-old filmmaker and his wife were found dead with knife stab wounds on their necks. As per reports, the local police authorities are still investigating the identity of the assailants and the motives behind the murders.
Dariush Mehrjui was hailed as one of the co-founders of the Iranian new wave of social realism due to his famed film "The Cow" (1969) which depicted the losses of rural Iranian farmers due to losing their cattle.
The noted filmmaker also directed multiple productions that conveyed different social stigmas and problems of Iran including "Leila" (1996) which depicts a woman's marital struggles in Iran, and "Bemani" (2002) which narrates the tale of a woman struggling to live a normal life in the extremely conservative Iranian society.
Dariush Mehrjui's works also gained him much recognition and awards including the Silver Hugo award from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Golden Seashell Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 1993.
