Ekram murder: 2 AL men sent to jail
Two Awami League men were sent to jail after they surrendered before a Feni court in connection with Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq murder case today.
The accused are: Jahangir Kabir alias Adel, AL joint secretary general of Feni district unit, and Ziaul Alam Mister, joint convener of Feni municipality unit of AL’s youth wing Jubo League, reports our Feni correspondent.
Jahangir and Ziaul are among 56 charge sheeted accused in the murder case.
Judge Alamgir Mohammad Faruki of the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court passed the order after they surrendered before the court around 10:00am.
Of the 56 accused, 21 still remain fugitive, 33 in jail including Jahangir and Ziaul. Of them, 55 belong to Awami League or its associated bodies.
Ekramul, who was Phulgazi upazila chairman in the district and also president of Phulgazi upazila AL, was shot and burnt to death in his car in Feni town in broad day light on May 20.
Inspector Abul Kalam Azad of Feni Model Police Station submitted the charge sheet before the district court on August 28 last year.
Ruling party lawmaker and general secretary of Feni Awami League Nizam Uddin Hazari, who was widely believed to have had a hand in the murder of the Phulgazi upazila chairman, was not charged by the investigation officer of the case.
Local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Minar, the prime accused, was indicted on August 28, 2014.
