Why GK the target of vandalism?
We strongly condemn the attack on the Gonoshasthaya Kendra last Friday. Not only were some of the buildings damaged and offices looted, students were also beaten up and injured and an attempt was made to break into the female dorm. The mayhem continued for a good part of the day starting from the morning. Reportedly, the attack was led by some of those who have filed five cases against its founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, including one for stealing fish and fruits of locals.
One also fails to comprehend the action and reaction of the police. It has not registered a GD of the incident till going to press, leave alone arrest anyone despite the fact the attackers had left behind their identity in the banner they had left hanging on one of the gates of GK. And despite the fact that a written complaint had been filed by the GK authorities on the very day, the police says necessary action would be taken after completion of investigation.
We wonder why the GK has been made the target of such anger, and whether it is a coincidence that it is receiving the wrath of those who have lodged the five cases and who seem to have an axe to grind on its founder at this particular time? While those cases are for the court to adjudicate, we cannot but express serious concern that an institution which had its baptism during the Liberation War, and which has attained international reputation on its own merit, and many global acclaims for its yeomen work in the field of rural healthcare, including the Magsaysay Award in 1985, should be subjected to such heinous acts.
