Rise in SSC pass rates commendable
We welcome the fact that after two consecutive years of a downtrend, pass rates in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations have increased this year with 82.8 percent of students coming out successful. It is also good to know that the number of schools with 100 percent pass rates have risen this year while the number of schools with zero pass rates have come down. The results of Dakhil exams as well as SSC vocational tests under the technical board were also better this time. Moreover, it is heartening to note that girls did better in these important board exams.
We think three important factors have contributed to such good results: better performance of the students in English and Mathematics, implementation of the new answer script evaluation method (standardisation of answer scripts), and successfully containing question paper leaks. While we congratulate both the students and the government for this success, we also think that the government needs to find out the reasons why in some 107 schools across the country, not a single student could pass the exams. Also, while the overall pass rate is around 83 percent, why is the pass rate in Sylhet division as low as 70.83 percent? The government needs to find out the reasons and address them with urgency. Also, the high pass rates don't necessarily mean that the quality of education is better. So, we should focus on improving the quality of education. Finally, we hope that all the students who have come out successful would get the opportunity to get into colleges and none of them, especially girls, drop out before then.
