Do 'study' as Tarique did
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has advised Awami League leaders to do some study of history, claiming that Tarique Rahman has revealed some "historical truths" after studying different books.
Fakhrul also went on to compare Tarique with Cuban leader Fidel Castro and said, “After his revolution, Castro had said in a court: 'I may be hanged, but history will embrace me.' And we know history has embraced him [Castro].”
Addressing a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday, he said, “There is enough information to support what Tarique has said in London. If Tarique Rahman is wrong, prove it providing proper evidence and information.”
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, a pro-BNP student body, organised the meeting protesting the “continued lies" against Tarique, senior vice-chairman of the BNP.
Tarique, elder son of BNP chief Khaleda Zia, on March 25 claimed that his father late president Ziaur Rahman was the first president of the country. Then on April 8, he claimed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became prime minister "illegally" in 1972.
His comments drew huge flak from historians, the media and other quarters.
AL leaders in and outside parliament lambasted Tarique and Khaleda. They alleged Tarique was influenced by the Pakistan secret service ISI to distort the Liberation War history.
Referring to some AL leaders' remarks on Tarique, Fakhrul said, “The language the Awami League leaders have used is unspeakable. It proves Awami League leaders have become politically bankrupt."
Referring to AL leader Tofail Ahmed, but not naming him, he said, "Where was the chief of Rakkhi Bahini [a paramilitary force] when Sheikh Mujib was murdered in 1975? No Awami League leaders, except for Kader Siddique, protested the assassination of Sheikh Mujib."
