Demo for relief in Sylhet village
Residents of a village in Sylhet Sadar upazila today staged demonstration demanding government relief during the ongoing shutdown.
Several hundred people of Islampur Porabari village took part in the demonstration amid the concern over spread of Covid-19, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
Abdul Gafur, day labourer and a resident of the village, said, "There is no work for the last 12 days and we have not received any government help. All my savings are gone."
"I'm forced to take to the street as the situation is dire," Gafur said.
Housewife Juheera Bibi said, "No work, no food and no help from the local chairman and member. I don't know what to do now."
Local Union Parishad Member Md Sirajul Islam said at least 600 people in the village need help. "We had given a list of 576 people to the administration. But we received only two tonnes of rice from the government allocation," he said.
Only five families have been assisted in the village, he added.
Khadimnagar Union Parishad Chairman Delwar Hossain said they have got only 2 tonnes of rice for the whole union. "It is not possible to provide relief to all with this amount of rice. I can't actually do anything without the government allocation," the chairman said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Mohammad Abul Kalam said they have distributed a total of 921 tonnes of rice and Tk 30,60,000 among people in three phases.
He said they have already received new allocations. Everyone will be provided help according to the list step-by-step, " he added.
