Ctg councillor freed hrs after imprisonment
A ward councillor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) was released only a few hours after a mobile court sentenced him to two years' imprisonment yesterday.
The court headed by CCC Executive Magistrate Nazia Shirin awarded the jail term to Mahbubul Alam, councillor of ward-4, for obstructing an eviction drive at Tekbazar area around 12:00noon and assaulting two female city corporation staffs, sources said.
Mahbubul was sent to Chandgaon Police Station around 1:00pm. However, he was taken to the Nagar Bhaban two hours later.
Then CCC Mayor M Manjur Alam held a meeting at his office where Mahbub "apologised" for the incident and was freed afterwards.
While the meeting was going on, Mahbub's supporters gathered in front of the Nagar Bhaban and chanted slogans demanding his release.
Terming the incident a misunderstanding, Mayor Manjur told journalists that the matter had been “resolved”.
Asked about the sentence, Manjur claimed that he was not aware of it.
Contacted, magistrate Nazia said, “I delivered the verdict on the spot, but could not complete the whole process”.
She also said that the mayor and the chief executive officer of the CCC were looking into the matter.
