An alleged criminal was killed in a "gunfight" with Rapid Action Battalion in Tongi upazila of Gazipur last night.
The deceased -- Mohammad Hasan (30) -- was an accused in 15 cases including murders, drugs and police assault filed with different police stations, Morshedul Hasan, operations officer of Rab-1, told The Daily Star.
The "gunfight" happened around 8:30pm when Rab members conducted a raid near Hazi Mazhar Slum area after receiving information that criminals were taking preparation for unlawful activities there, the Rab official said.
Sensing presence of law enforcers, the alleged criminals opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, resulting in the "gunfight", Morshedul said.
Hasan was hit by bullets and was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he added.
Two Rab members sustained minor injuries, the Rab official claimed, adding that they recovered two firearms, eight bullets and around 400 pieces of yaba from the spot.
