Hospital manager beaten up by patient’s son in Dhaka's Panthapath
Attendants of a patient allegedly beat up an official of the private hospital Health and Hope in Dhaka's Panthapath area following a row over bills this afternoon.
The injured, Mahamud Hossain, senior manager of the hospital, took treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College and Hospital for his wounds in the face.
Talking to The Daily Star, Mahamud said a patient named Jahanara Begum got admitted to the hospital on February 16 and the hospital assessed a bill of around Tk 55,000 yesterday before her release.
Jahanara was in a cabin at the hospital.
But the woman's son Sharif, who is according to his father a vice-president of Kalabagan Thana Unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, wanted to pay only Tk 20,000 which the hospital denied to accept.
The hospital authorities later reduced the bill to Tk 50,000. Yet, they refused to pay the amount and took a local ruling party leader to the hospital to mediate. But Sharif had to finally pay Tk 40,000, Mahamud said.
"Around 3:30pm today, Sharif along with another man entered my office and threatened me, asking why my phone was switched off yesterday. At one stage, the duo started beating me up, closing the door from inside," Mahamud claimed.
Mahamud filed a complaint with Kalabagan Police Station in connection with the incident.
Contacted, Sharif said the hospital official misbehaved when he took one of his uncles to the hospital yesterday.
"As I went to the hospital today to know the reason, he again misbehaved with me and attempted to punch me," he claimed.
Sharif's father Abdul Khalek said the hospital authorities yesterday misbehaved when his son took a senior local Awami League leader to the hospital.
Poritosh Chandra, officer-in-charge of Kalabagan Police Station, said they got a written complaint in this regard. "We are investigating it," he said.
