Renowned actress Rani Sarkar passes away

Rani Sarkar, a veteran actress of Bangladeshi films, died of old age ailments in a hospital in Dhaka today.

She breathed her last at Eden Multicare Hospital in the capital around 4:00am.

The body of  Rani Sarkar will be taken to the office of Channel i at Tejgaon around 2:00pm to pay tribute to the actress. From there, the body will be taken to FDC where her namaz-e-janaza will be held, said General Secretary of  Bangladesh Film Artists' Association Zayed Khan.

Later, she will be buried at Azimpur Graveyard,  Zayed Khan said.

Rani Sarkar, whose real name was Mossamot Amirun Nessa Khanam, was born at Shonatol village in Shatkhira's Kaliganj upazila.

She completed her primary education from a school in Shonatola and later finished her SSC from Khulna Corporation Girls High School.

Her acting career began as a stage performer in 1958. In the same year, Rani got her first break in AJ Kardar's film 'Dur Hai Shukh Ka Gao'.

Later in 1962, she performed with the famous producer Ehteshamur Rahman in a Urdu film called 'Chanda'.

This is the film, which made Amirun Nessa change her name into Rani Sarkar. After the success of  'Chanda',  she got to play the central role in two other famous films called 'Talash' and 'Notun Sur'.

In 2016, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina provided her financial support worth Tk 20 lakh. The same year, she received the Bangladesh National Film Award for lifetime achievement and the Daily Star Standard Chartered Celebrating Life lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the Bangladeshi film industry.
