Teachers boycott school as SMC chief gives 'threat'
Teachers of Notun Bosoti Government Primary School in Manikganj Sadar upazila did not attend school yesterday due to fear of being assaulted by the president of the school managing committee (SMC).
Eight teachers, including the headmaster, submitted a letter to Sadar Upazila Education Officer (UEO) Abu Sayem Mohammad Towhidul Islam to take action against SMC president Selim Mia as he threatened to kill them.
At the meeting of the SMC on April 26, Selim ordered the SMC member secretary, also the headmaster, Shahana Aktar to get up from her chair. He then sat on the headmaster's chair and asked her to leave the school within a week.
Shahana said she submitted a bill voucher after doing repair work and got a cheque for Tk 1 lakh from the revenue department on June 20, but the president withdrew the money.
Selim at first denied the allegation and then said he will deposit the money to the school fund after checking how much was spent.
He complained that Shahana had told journalists that he takes narcotics in the classroom of the school, and denied the allegation.
Other teachers said Selim always behaved rudely with them and it is not possible to work in the school in this situation.
The UEO said he has informed the higher authorities about the matter, and the teachers have been attached to the upazila education office.
Manikganj District Primary Education Officer Aleya Ferdousy Shikha said, "We are investigating various allegations against the managing committee president, including misbehaviour with the teachers,” adding that if there is evidence against him, an ad hoc committee will be formed to dissolve the managing committee.
