Teacher killed for dowry, husband held

A schoolteacher was hacked to death allegedly by her husband over dowry in Lama upazila of the district on Friday.

The deceased was Ma Kya Ching Marma, 28, wife of Thoai Shwe Mong Marma of Lama municipality, and assistant teacher of Ruposhipara Primary School in the area. She belonged to indigenous Marma community.

Family members alleged that Thoai used to torture Ma Kya for dowry since their marriage four months ago.

Around 8:30pm on Friday, the couple locked in an altercation over the issue.

At one stage, Thoai attacked Ma Kya with sharp weapons, leaving her dead on the spot.

On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Bandarban Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. They also arrested Thoai from the spot.

At one stage, the arrestee was found tangled in electric cables as he tried to kill himself by electrocution, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Lama Police Station.

Thoai was later admitted to the hospital, said the OC.

Meanwhile, primary schoolteachers of the upazila formed a human chain in Lama Bazar area yesterday morning, demanding exemplary punishment to the killer of Ma Kya.
