Storms sweep thru' 3 Sunamganj upazilas
At least 34 people were injured and over 500 houses damagaed as storms lashed several villages in three upazilas of Sunamganj district early yesterday and on Monday night.
The affected upazilas are Biswambharpur, Tahirpur and Sunamganj Sadar upazila.
Accompanied by heavy rain, the storms damaged Irri-boro paddy field on at least 5000 acres of land, uprooted a good number of trees and electric poles in the upazilas.
Power supply in Sadar and Biswambharpur upazilas were restored after employees of Palli Bidyut Samity reinstalled the uprooted electric poles in the storm-hit villages yesterday noon.
Biswambharpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al-Mahmud told this correspondent that a storm-hit several villages of the upazila around 1:30am, damaging over 250 houses and injuring at least 15 people.
Contacted, Tahirpur Upazila Chairman Mohammad Kamruzzaman said a storm coupled with hail lashed several villages in the upazila around 1:00am and continued for an hour.
At least 200 houses were damaged and nine villagers injured during the storm, he added.
In Sadar upazila, at least 10 people were injured and nearly 50 houses damaged when a storm swept through several villages in the upazila around 7:00pm on Monday, said Abdul Hai, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Sadar Police Station.
Of the injured, five were admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital while the rest given first aid at the hospital, the OC added.
