'Stop construction of Rampal power plant'
A procession of some hundred bicycles was brought out in the town yesterday, protesting construction of Rampal power plant posing a threat of damaging natural resources of the Sundarbans.
Organised by Sundarbans Protection Movement Committee in Gaibandha, the procession paraded different streets in the municipality area chanting slogans to stop construction of Rampal power plant.
Ahsanul Habib Sayed, member of the National Committee to Protect Oil , Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports, inaugurated the rally on the Gaibandha Press Club premises.
The speakers at the rally said Rampal power plant should be stopped by any means to protect Sundarbans from destruction.
They called upon all to be united for the greater movement in this context.
They also threatened to wage tougher movement across the country if immediate steps are not taken to stop construction of the disputed coal-based power plant.
Mahabub Alam Milon, convener of Sundarbans Protection Movement Committee, Shamim Ara Meena, president of Chhatra Front and its secretary Paromanada Das spoke at the rally.
