1,00,000 Yaba tablets seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in separate drives seized one lakh Yaba tablets from Teknaf upazila of the district yesterday. On secret information, the border guards raided a boat in Kaiukkhali Canal and seized 90,000 Yaba tablets at around 8:00am, said BGB-42 Battalion sources. However, the smugglers managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the BGB men. In another drive, the border guards arrested one Md Sirajullah, 28, a Myanmar national, along with 10,000 Yaba tablets in Hatcherkhal area of the upazila.
AL leader hurt in attack

A local Awami League leader and his associate were injured in an attack by criminals in Charparboti union of Companiganj upazila on Monday. The injured are Md Nurul Huda, 58, Muktijoddah affairs secretary of Charparboti union unit of AL, and his associate Md Belal Hossain, 40. Sajidur Rahman Sajid, officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station, said a gang equipped with sharp weapons attacked the duo in the area when they in a motorbike were going to their houses at around 11:00pm. A case was field in connection with the attack, said the OC.
15 houses gutted

At least 15 houses were gutted in a fire at Debarupara village in Birganj upazila yesterday. KM Kutub Uddin, chairman of Chhotogram Union Parishad, said the fire originated at the house of one Insan Ali at 1:20pm and soon engulfed the 14 adjacent houses. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the flames with the help of locals. The affected house owners claimed that the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 15 lakh.
Two held with firearm

Joint forces arrested two youths along with a firearm at Kanungopara in Panchhari upazila on Saturday afternoon. The arrestees are Ashin Chakma, 32, son of Rabichandra Chakma of College Para area in Dighinala upazila, and Susomoy Chakma, 30, son of Shubhankar Chakma of Nanchhari area in the upazila. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police and Bangladesh Army conducted a raid in the area at around 4:00pm and arrested the duo along with the firearm, said Moin Uddin, officer-in-charge of Panchhari Police Station.
Fake Indian currencies seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized counterfeit Indian currencies worth Rs 17.45 lakh from a house at Bishawnathpur in Shibganj upazila on Monday night. A BGB team, acting on a tip-off, raided one Asamuddin's house at the village and seized 17 lakh 45 thousand 500 counterfeit Indian currencies, said Lt Col Abu Zafor Sheikh Mohammad Bazlul Haque, commanding officer of BGB-9 Battalion. However, Asamuddin, 45, and his son Babu Ahmed, 25, managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the border guards, said the CO.
Cotton factory catches fire

A fire broke out at a cotton factory in Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) area of the district yesterday. The incident occurred at around 12:30pm, said Shah Mohammad, owner of the factory. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the flame after an hour of frantic effort. The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, said Abdur Rauf Mollah, an official of Jhenidah Fire Fighting Station.
