Jamaat hartal ends peacefully

The daylong countrywide hartal (shutdown) sponsored by the Jamaat-e-Islami ended without reports of any significant occurrence anywhere in Bangladesh.

Beginning at 6:00am, the hartal, protesting the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty for its leader and war criminal Mir Quasem Ali, ended this evening.

In Dhaka metropolitan, the only difference was the moderate traffic on city streets instead of the heavy rush. Grossly, city life looked uninterrupted.

Shops and business establishments were seen open in Dhaka during the hartal. The traffic on roads grew and returned to normalcy as the day progressed.

Public transportation services in all Dhaka routes including Gabtoli, Mirpur, Uttara, Mohammadpur, Farmgate, Motijheel, Sayedabad, Jatrabari and Sadarghat were seen running smoothly.

Since last night, paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in the capital to avert any untoward situation. Today, police were seen on vigilance in all key points.
