Six fishermen jailed in Bhola for defying ban on fishing

At least six fishermen were sentenced to 15 days' imprisonment and another one was fined by a mobile court in Charfashion upazila under the district yesterday for violating a ban on catching all types of fish from the Tentulia River.

The jail term awardees are Yusuf, Nur Mohammad, Riaz, Jafar, Shajahan and Gazi while one Abu Majhi was fined Tk 1,000.

They all hailed from different villages under the upazila.

Asaduzzaman, upazila fisheries officer in Charfashion, said a mobile court led by Mokhlesur Rahman, assistant commissioner (land), conducted the drives in the river from 6:00am.

The law enforcers detained seven fishermen from Bakshi Ghat and Ghoser Haat areas around 1:00pm, while they were fishing illegally.

The government has imposed a two-month ban from March 1 on catching and selling of all types of fish from the major rivers for safe breeding.

Mobile courts will continue drives in the rivers and it will punish the offenders up to two years imprisonment for violating the ban.
