One to die, 3 get RI for life
A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death and three others to rigorous imprisonment for life for killing a man in Jamalpur Sadar upazila on November 20 in 2002.
The court also fined the recipient of capital punishment Tk 20,000, and Tk 10,000 each to the two others, in default, they will have to suffer six more months in jail, said Court Inspector Rubel Miah.
The court acquitted two people as they were found not guilty.
Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court Judge SM Zillur Rahman delivered the verdict in presence of the convicts.
The death sentence recipient is Shafiqul Islam, now 38, son of Hanif Uddin, and the life-term convicts are Sumon Mia, now 36, son of Hanif Uddin, Zinnah, now 45, son of Abul Hossain and Abu Sama, now 42, son of late Hossain Ali, all residents of Gopalpur village in Sadar upazila.
According to the prosecution, Sumon borrowed an audio-cassette from his neighbour Hasan Masud, son of Ajahar Ali, on November 5 in 2002.
Hasan asked Sumon to return the cassette on November 20, but he (Sumon) refused. Instead, Sumon beat up Hasan.
After the incident, Hasan's father along with family members went to Sumon's house with a complaint against Sumon.
Sumon along with his brothers and relatives locked in an altercation with Ajahar over the issue. At one stage, they hacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured, the prosecution said.
Ajahar succumbed to his injuries on the way to Jamalpur General Hospital.
Ajahar's elder brother Shahjahan Ali filed a murder case on November 21, 2002, accusing seven people, including the convicts, with Sadar Police Station, the prosecution said.
One of the accused, Jahangir Alam Rupchan, passed away several years ago.
Habiran Begum, wife of Hanif Uddin and Halima Begum, wife of convict Zinnah, were acquitted, the prosecution said.
