Chattogram RMG workers end demo after salary payment
Workers of two ready-made garment factories in Kalurghat industrial area of Chattogram withdrew their demonstration this afternoon after the authorities started to pay salaries to them ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Thousands of agitating workers went on demonstration last night and padlocked Legacy Fashion Limited and Anwara Fashion Limited demanding their one-month dues.
The situation came under control when authority decided to pay the salary this noon, Meher Osim Das, sub-inspector (SI) of Chandgao Police Station, told our staff correspondent.
Earlier in the day, around 7,000 agitating workers gathered inside the two factories.
High ups of police held a meeting with factory authorities upon which they agreed to pay salaries to the workers, said the SI.
Nazma Begum, a worker of Legacy Fashion Limited was seen coming out of the factory with a happy face today as she received her salary before the Eid festival.
"They paid the bonus on August 6 and assured us of paying the salary on Thursday. We burst out in anger when we saw them offering us just the basic of the total salary. As a result, thousands of workers went into work abstention," Nazma said.
Now their full salary has been paid with which many of them would go to their village home to celebrate Eid, she said.
Both the factories are owned by Habib Group, a Chattogram-based company.
When contacted, the factory authorities declined to make any comment.
