VGF rice seized, SMC chairman held
Police seized 14 sacks of rice meant for Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme kept in a room at Jainkathi Government primary School in Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
The law enforcers also detained Jasim Uddin Hawlader, 43, chairman of the school managing committee (SMC), for his alleged involvement in misappropriating the rice, meant for the poor.
Officer in Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Mostafizur Rahman said Jainkathi Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Feroz Alam kept several hundred sacks of VGF rice in a room of Jainkathi Government Primary School on Monday for distributing those among the enlisted beneficiaries under his union and handed over the keys to the night guard of the institution.
Meanwhile, SMC Chairman Jasim went to the school and forcibly grabbed the keys from night guard Yousuf.
He later took away 14 sacks of rice from there and kept those in another room of the school.
In the morning, when the UP chairman found the sacks missing, he informed the matter to police, who went to the spot and arrested Jasim.
During primary interrogation, Jasim confesses his involvement in the incident, the OC said, adding that UP Chairman Feroz filed a case with Sadar Police Station in this regard.
