Bogura rape accused Tufan’s sister-in-law held with firearm

Police today arrested two people including a sister-in-law of Tufan Sarkar, an accused of the rape of a college student and the subsequent torture of the victim and her mother in Bogura two years back.

The arrestees were identified as Rima Khatun, 32, wife of Tufan’s younger brother Md Sohag Sarkar, and one Md Arifin Soikat, 29, a resident of Katnarpara area of Bogura town.

A team of detective branch of police (DB) arrested one Md. Arifin Soikat, 29, a resident of Katnarpara area of the district town, and seized a foreign 7.65 pistol, two magazines, and four rounds of bullets, said Sonatan Chakrabarty, additional superintendent of police (Media cell) in Bogura.

In primary interrogation, Sohag admitted that he collected the gun and bullets from Rima, the police official said.

Following Soikat’s information, the DB officials arrested Rima Khatun and seized a 9 mm pistol and one magazine after raiding her house at Chaksutrapur area. Sohag is now in jail in another case, said the police official.

A case was filed with the Bogura Sadar Police Station against the duo.

Tufan, former convener of Bogra town unit of Sramik League, on July 17 abducted the female student from her home and raped her and then asked his party cadres and the woman councillor to make sure everything was hushed up.

Then, they picked up the student and her mother on Friday, tortured them for four hours and then shaved their heads.

However, one of the Tufan’s brothers Putu Sarkar, 45, was killed in a reported gunfight with police last year.
