Trifle matter leaves 100 injured in Habiganj
Over 100 people were injured yesterday when several hundred rivalling villagers clashed over a trivial matter in Ajmeriganj upazila of Habiganj.
At least 15 of the seriously injured were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, while others received treatment at different local medical facilities including Habiganj Sadar Hospital, said Toimur Bakht Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ajmeriganj Police Station.
According to locals, the clash broke out around noon in Rosulpur village over one Khursed Mia’s refusal to repay Tk 5,000 to lender Rois Mia -- both from the same village.
When last Friday Rois approached Khursed for the money that he had lent him (Khursed) a few months ago, the latter promised that he would make the payment at a later time.
Yesterday morning, Rois again asked Khursed to repay the money. But this time Khorshed outright refused to repay. Infuriated, Rois raised a complaint with Ashraf Uddin panchayat, a traditional village council.
Supporters of a rival panchayat led by Nurul Haque in the meantime mobilised in the area and locked in a clash with followers of Ashraf Uddin panchayat, said locals.
Several platoons of police reached the spot and brought the situation under control by firing rubber bullets and teargas shells, the OC said, adding that police remain on alert at the scene to avert any further untoward situation.
Mehedi Hasan, a doctor at Habiganj Sadar Hospital, said they gave primary treatment to most of the injured at the hospital and transferred the ones with serious injuries to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
