Trader fined for illegal sand lifting from Titas
A mobile court on Monday fined a trader for lifting sand illegally from the Titas river near Sheikh Hasina Titas Setu (bridge) at Charlohania village in Banchharampur upazila of the district.
Executive Magistrate Nasir Uddin Sarowar, also the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), led the court.
Nasir Uddin said sand trader Saidul Islam was fined Tk 80,000.
Being informed that Saidul was lifting sand from the river the mobile court raided the bridge area and fined him, said the UNO.
On January 5, the High Court (HC) ordered the government to stop sand extraction from the Titas river near Sheikh Hasina Titas Setu in 48 hours in order to protect the eye-pleasant bridge and flow of the river.
Issuing a suomoto (voluntary) rule, the court asked the authorities concerned of the government to submit a report before it after complying with the directive in a month.
The HC came up with the order and rule following a report published on The Daly Star on December 25 last year under a headline “Illegal sand trade poses threat to Titas bridge”.
