A schoolteacher was suspended yesterday, following public outrage over allegedly beating a female student of the institution in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Tuesday.
The accused, Habibur Rahman, is an assistant teacher at Shahjibazar Bidyut Unnayan Board High School.
The victim, Sadikunnahar Mim, 14, a Class X student of the school, and daughter of Mahbub Talukder of Kalikapur village, is now undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital.
Witnesses said Habibur kept beating Mim till she went unconscious after she was a bit late in returning her classroom after the break on Tuesday.
Later, fellow students admitted injured Mim to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, said victim's uncle Sajidur Rahman said.
Dr Kamrul Islam, resident medical officer of the hospital, the girl sustained injuries on the head.
Hearing the news, people from surrounding villages besieged the school in the afternoon and demanded immediate removal of the accused teacher.
Abul Hossain, headmaster of the school, said a three-member committee was formed yesterday to investigate the incident.
