Suchitra finds silver lining
Suchitra Rani’s father Santosh Chandra, a village doctor in Tangail’s Gopalpur upazila, died when she was taking Higher Secondary Examinations in May.
Despite the shock of losing the only income generator in her family, she passed the exams with flying colours.
But when the young talent, a resident of Sahapur village, got selected at Rajshahi Medical College, her future looked bleak as her father left nothing but a small dwelling to support her higher education.
After exhausting all her resources, Suchitra’s widowed mother Mukti Rani, a homemaker, had given up arranging the finances for her daughter’s dream of being a physician.
Taking notice of her plight, Tangail district administration has recently stepped forward to provide assistance to Suchitra.
Just when her classes at the medical school were about to start, in January next year, Tangail Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shahidul Islam recently handed over Tk 35,000 to her from government funds for buying books and supplies, including a human skeleton for anatomy course.
Yesterday, the DC handed over an additional Tk 25,000 to her and assured her of providing all necessary financial support on behalf of the administration throughout her studies at the medical school, as long as he holds the office of DC in Tangail.
“Although born in a poor family in a remote area, Suchitra is a bright student. Something great can be achieved through helping such a meritorious girl,” the DC said.
Thanking the DC for the support, Suchitra said she would in return also continue her endeavours to provide medical care to the needy in rural areas after she becomes a cardiologist.
She also thanked Amir Khasru, assistant superintendent of police in Tangail (Gopalpur circle), for the generous contribution he made towards the admission fee at the medical college.
