Substandard materials used in road construction work!
Substandard and less quantity materials are allegedly being used in construction of a 197-metre-long RCC (Rod Cement Concrete) road under Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) at a cost of Tk 10 lakh at Jongra village in Patgram upazila.
Interestingly, an alleged broker of Patgram upazila LGED office is monitoring the construction work identifying himself as the upazila engineer’s representative.
The contractor concerned started the RCC road construction work on June 15 and already completed 90 percent of the work.
On June 18, locals protested against use of low quality bricks and substandard materials and stopped the construction work for a few hours before the LGED upazila engineer went to the spot and convinced them.
“We protested strongly against use of substandard and less quantity materials, but the LGED engineer didn’t pay heed,” said Anwar Hossain, 55, a resident of Jongra village, adding that the contractor concerned in unison with the LGED engineer pocketed the maximum fund.
Meanwhile, Mohabbat Ali, an alleged broker at Patgram Upazila LGED office, has been monitoring the construction work introducing himself as a representative of the engineer.
When asked, Mohabbat said he knows about the construction materials much better than anyone else.
“The construction work has been conducted as per the schedule,” he said.
Contractor Ali Hossain said as no objection has been raised from the LGED engineer, so the work was done properly.
Patgram Upazila LGED Assistant Engineer Abdur Rahim said he was supposed to visit the site but he could not do so due to pressure of other official work so the upazila engineer asked Mohabbat to monitor the work.
Patgram Upazila LGED Engineer ATM Shamsuzzoha said Mohabbat is a master roll employee at his office and he is well trained in engineering and other technical issues.
