Schoolgirl made chamber president for a day
It was not like any other ordinary day for 10th grader Tasnim Binte Munir on Friday.
When she was supposed to enjoy a holiday with her family on Friday, the teenager was attending a series of meetings with different business bodies and even presided over one of those.
Made president of Patuakhali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) for a day, Tasnim first had a meeting with Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Masumur Rahman at his office and exchanged views on various issues.
She later visited Chemists and Druggists Association's Patuakhali unit, and held a meeting with its committee members where she proposed the trade body to appoint a woman salesperson at every medicine shop, considering the interest of women consumers.
Leaders of the Chemist and Druggist Association welcomed her proposal and assured her they would take immediate steps in this regard.
Finally, she chaired the monthly coordination meeting with the PCCI body in the town where 17 out of 21 executive members of the committee were present.
The event was organised with the help of Plan Bangladesh, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), marking the International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated annually on October 11, Child Protection Specialist of the NGO Rezanul Haque said.
“We selected Tasnim to be the best fitted for the job as she has been engaged with different social activities like fighting against early marriage, drug abuse and reducing school dropouts,” Rezanul said.
Tasnim, a Class X student at Patuakhali Government Girls' High School, took over the charge from PCCI President Md Mohiuddin and instantly engaged herself with various activities for the day.
“Although I am still a teenager, I felt proud to perform the role of PCCI president,” Tasnim said, adding that the experience made her self-confident and such initiative would be much helpful for women's empowerment in different sectors.
PCCI President Mohiuddin said they will ensure participation of female representatives in next PCCI committee considering the interest of women.
